NEWS DESCRIPTION:The article features an interview with Stewart Patch, member of and treasurer for the Beach Canal Lighthouse Group (BCLG), founded in 2003 with the goal of acquiring, restoring and opening to the public the 1858 Burlington Canal Lighthouse and the 1857 Keeper's Dwelling. These buildings are located at 1159 and 1155 Beach Boulevard on the Hamilton side of the Beach Strip adjacent to the Burlington Canal and lift bridge. Thwarted for many years by failed negotiations with the federal government, the BCLG has been working with the Hamilton (now Hamilton-Oshawa) Port Authority since 2017 to achieve this goal, which is now finally within our reach. The Burlington Canal Light Station was designated municipally under the Ontario Heritage Act in 1996. See the Reasons for Designation (accompanying PDF).
